About FEA Timber
FEA Timber is the timber products and trading division of FEA. The division manages the production and marketing of FEA's eucalypt plantation hardwoods and other timber products.
FEA Timber Markets
World demand for hardwood timber has been increasing. As global markets for timber products grow, including those sourced from hardwood plantations, FEA Timber expects that demand for its plantation timbers will increase. As environmental pressure on native forests as a woodchip source also increases, it is expected that plantations will have a positive future.
FEA Timber also recognises that plantation forestry has the support of the Australian government which, in its Vision 2020 statement (1997), has a goal of trebling the national area under plantation by 2020.
About SmartFibre
FEA currently produces and markets its wood fibre products through SmartFibre Pty Ltd, a modern export woodchip facility located at Bell Bay in North Eastern Tasmania. SmartFibre Bell Bay (formerly known as Tasmanian Fibre) is jointly owned by FEA and Integrated Tree Cropping Ltd (ITC) and was established in September 2003.
SmartFibre Bell Bay exports eucalypt hardwood woodchips to pulp and paper manufacturing customers in Japan and China. SmartFibre wood fibre products are used to produce some of the world’s finest quality paper and paper board.
The SmartFibre mill currently produces and exports on average 250,000 tonnes of wood fibre per annum.
SmartFibre sources its wood supplies from FEA’s plantation sawmill residues, eucalypt plantations managed by FEA for its Project growers, FEA’s own plantations, State Government plantations, private tree farmers and native re-growth.
SmartFibre Bell Bay is part of the National SmartFibre Network, which aims, as plantation estates mature, to eventually export from seven facilities and ports around Australia, including Bell Bay in Tasmania, Brisbane and Gladstone in Queensland, Albany, Bunbury, and Esperance in WA and Portland in Victoria.
