Port Terminals

As part of the acquisition of Grainco, Bulk Terminals Australia (BTA) has been folded into the GrainCorp Ports Division which operates a total of 9 ports at Mackay, Gladstone, Pinkenba and Fisherman Islands at Brisbane, Kooragang Island and Carrington at Newcastle, Port Kembla, Geelong and Portland.

GrainCorp port terminals handle a range of bulk products including grain, woodchips, mineral sands as well as containers.

Each terminal has road (Gladstone excepted) and rail access to receive deliveries and offers multiple segregations to service customers' product classification needs.

Technical Services laboratories are located at each terminal to scrutinise samples of grain before shipping to confirm quality classifications and pest-free status. Grain fumigation to assure the cleanliness of grain is also conducted at each terminal.

Technical Services

In addition to the quality testing services provided by GrainCorp's country based laboratories to clients who use our storage system, we are also able to provide a range of advanced quality testing services directly to grower and to other customers year round.

Quality Assessment - a wide range of commodities can be analysed for test weight, moisture, protein, oil content, impurity content, defective grain counts and weed seed content. This service can also provide a classification of the sample provided according to specified receival standards. Growers or merchants can use this data to determine market price, marketing strategies or whether the instruments they are using to determine grain quality are accurate.

Tissue Testing - this involves analysis of cereal plant tissue using NIR techniques to enable growers to determine nitrogen fertiliser input requirements during the early stages of crop growth.

Head Testing - grain head testing in October using NIR technology can provide the grower with a prediction of grain protein levels during the harvest period, and therefore, an indication of likely market returns.

Germination Testing - by using this service, growers can determine the germination percentage of the grain they are using for sowing, and can adjust sowing rates accordingly to obtain optimum plant densities.

A range of customers use our technical service laboratories because of their reliability, their use of advanced technologies, and their independence. In addition, we continually monitor our own performance against other laboratories through collaborative testing to ensure that our results are accurate and consistent.
