Great Southern is an investment manager specialising in the agribusiness sector, providing Australians with an opportunity to invest in agriculture.
The company’s strategy is very clear: to identify agricultural commodities which are in demand globally, particularly from Asian markets, and then to package projects which allow investors to participate in their development.
Great Southern is focused on particular segments of agriculture which the company believes can provide signifi cant economic and social benefi ts through economies of scale. The key to this is the selection of commodities that have international markets and operate on a large scale basis.
From day one, forestry has been the company’s core focus, and this remains the case to this day. Our hardwood plantations produce woodchip which is in high global demand for use in the paper production process. The company’s hardwood plantation estate is now being harvested, with regular shipments of woodchip leaving the Port of Albany in Western Australia destined for the pulp and paper mills of Japan.
Over the past three years, Great Southern has progressively expanded its product range. Wine grapes, organic olives and beef cattle have all been identifi ed as meeting the rigorous criteria we apply to the commodities in which we offer investment opportunities, including a favourable supply / demand position and sustainability over the long term.
Great Southern believes there are outstanding global opportunities for Australian agriculture, especially throughout Asia. In essence, our business model allows us to pool our investors’ resources to deliver economies of scale and thereby compete on a world stage.
The company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1999, and it is now part of the S&P/ASX 200.
