Introduction from our CEO
At Mondi, we plan to be the world’s best performing paper and packaging business.
This doesn’t necessarily mean being the biggest – it means being the best in many ways:
The best for customers – innovating, manufacturing and distributing the paper and packaging products they need, available at prices they’re happy to pay and through a supply infrastructure that serves them well
The best for employees – providing the potential for fulfilling careers in which personal commitment is rewarded
The best for communities – offering the employment and other opportunities needed for wealth creation and security
The best for the environment – placing the highest importance on meeting the sustainable development challenges of our world and era
We’re already one of the leading global players in paper and packaging, outperforming our competitors in several of these areas. Our challenge now is to move ahead successfully in every way, based on our strategy of maximising the cost advantages that our presence in emerging markets gives us.
This provides the flexibility to invest in every area of the business as we progress, sharing our success with our customers, our people and our communities, both local and global.
Mondi at a Glance
Mondi is a leading international paper and packaging group, with 34,000 employees across 112 sites in 34 countries.
Today we have two primary businesses, our Packaging and Business Paper business units, each of which is a major player in its own market sector. Packaging, for example, is Europe’s largest producer of kraft paper, while Business Paper is the largest producer of office paper and second largest producer of uncoated woodfree paper in Europe.
In addition, we have paper merchant operations in Austria and Eastern Europe, and newsprint businesses in South Africa, Russia and the UK.
As a business, we pride ourselves on constantly using innovation in all our operations to ensure the highest possible product quality and levels of customer satisfaction.
The recent launch of neox, for example – the world’s first nano hybrid paper, uniting the benefits of a coated and uncoated finish on the same sheet – is merely the latest in a line of breakthroughs that are helping us progress towards our goal of being the world’s best-performing paper and packaging business.
Other Mondi innovations are delivering advances in many areas of life, from greater ease and convenience in the office to reduced breakage rates for goods in transit and enhanced freshness for fruit and vegetables.
We have corporate offices in both the UK and South Africa, and are listed in London and Johannesburg under a dual-listed company structure.

Our market sectors
At Mondi, we operate primarily in two major global market sectors – Business Paper and Packaging.
Packaging
The global packaging sector is made up of a number of markets, including paper-based packaging (containerboard, corrugated boxes, cartons, kraft paper and industrial bags ) and non-paper packaging (flexible and rigid plastics, metal and glass).
The Mondi Packaging business unit is focused on paper (excluding carton) and flexible plastic packaging. Its products include containerboard, corrugated packaging, kraft paper and industrial bags as well as plastic flexible packaging, extrusion-coated and release liner materials for various applications.
Paper-based packaging represents about a third of the global packaging industry, which generates revenues of some $450 billion each year. Containerboard is a major sector within it, with Europe and North America accounting for more than half the annual global demand of 113 million tonnes.
Containerboard is used for corrugated packaging which is applied primarily in the food, agricultural, durable and non-durable goods industries and is the most widely used form of packaging for the transportation of manufactured and bulk goods. It is increasingly used for display as well (shelf-ready packaging) requiring high quality printing and easy opening features. European demand of corrugated packaging is approximately 25 million tonnes or €19 billion.
Kraft paper is a high-strength paper produced out of virgin-based fibre. Globally, 54 per cent is used for producing consumer bags, paper-based flexible packaging, wrapping paper and release materials. Industrial bags comprise paper bags, produced from sack kraft paper, and plastic bags. The remaining 46 per cent of the production is processed in industrial bags, which are mainly used in the building industry (often referred to as sack paper). Primary uses for industrial bags include building materials, chemicals, lawn and garden materials, agricultural and animal and pet food. European demand for kraft paper and industrial bags is currently estimated at €4 billion.
The flexibles sector is fragmented and includes many different products serving numerous end-uses. Flexibles products are primary plastic films and paper-based products that are engineered to provide specific characteristics required to meet the needs of the relevant end-use. Annually, in Europe, Release liners, used in the adhesives industry, generate for €1.5 billion of sales, extrusion coating for €3.2 billion (excluding liquid packaging) and consumer flexibles a further €9.3 billion, with approximately 76 per cent of sales being to the food processing and packaging industries.
Business Paper
The annual global demand for business paper is estimated at 148 million tonnes. The two main product areas in which we’re active each represent a significant proportion of this total – uncoated woodfree paper at 35 per cent (54 million tonnes) and newsprint at 28 per cent (39 million tonnes).
